Mike Soegtrop – Canadian Wildlife Photographer
I am a Canadian wildlife photographer based in Toronto, driven by a lifelong passion for the natural world. Nature has been a constant in my life—unpredictable, humbling, and endlessly beautiful. It never disappoints, especially when you are willing to slow down and truly observe.
My career has followed an unconventional path, best described as a continuous search for adventure and meaning. In my early years, I worked in emergency health services and crisis management in Toronto—an experience that taught me patience, focus, and calm under pressure. Those same qualities are essential in wildlife photography, where success often comes to those who wait quietly and respect the moment as it unfolds.
Shift work allowed me the freedom to travel, and during that time I began pursuing photography and writing as a photojournalist. I worked as an associate editor for Diver Magazine Canada and travelled extensively across Canada and the Caribbean, documenting shipwrecks and marine life. I also wrote for Equinox Magazine, including an article on the tragic sinking of the Empress of Ireland in the St. Lawrence River, where 1,012 lives were lost.
I have been engaged in still and video photography for over 30 years. More recently, I began sharing my work publicly through galleries and social media, curating what I consider my strongest images and most personal perspectives. My photography focuses primarily on birds and wildlife—intimate portraits and natural behaviours captured with respect for the animals and their environment.
Through my work, I hope to inspire a deeper appreciation for wildlife and a renewed commitment to protecting the natural world we share.
I partner with trusted local printers to deliver museum-quality artwork and merchandise at accessible prices. If you have any questions about selecting a piece or finding the right fit for your space, I’m always happy to help.
